U Comment, I Follow

Update :  Due to abuse of this feature, as of June 2009, we have removed the Do Follow attribute from our comments.

We are taking a brief break from the Social Media series to mention a slight change we have made to the blog.  We have decided to join the “U Comment, I Follow movement” and implemented the change this weekend.

Most blog platforms default to a “no follow” setting for comments.  In other words, when you leave a comment on a blog, even though you may leave the URL to your website, the blog is coded to advise search engines not to follow the link.

This was initially implemented to combat spam, but with spam programs like Akismet, which we use on our blog, the spam comments are automatically removed.  We want to encourage readers to leave their comments and allow links back to their sites for those who participate.

To implement the change, we installed the Do Follow plugin for WordPress and then used one of the cool U Comment, I Follow badges developed by Randa Clay design to let our readers know.

Brilliant, loads of blogs are now taking the “You Comment, I Follow” stance, I myself do the same on my blog via , NoFollow Free.

  5. Hi, I am a guide dog raiser in Seattle, WA. The puppy I am currently raising is named Shep. I love your blog and I love reading about other people’s experiences. I also have a website where I sell pet supplies and i have a blog on it also about guide dogs. I built the site to try and help raise money for guide dogs and other animal charities.

Oh thank you for posting this. I had previously removed the “no-follow” from my blogger blog, and mentioned this in my sidebar, but love the badge. So much more powerful than more text in the sidebar…

Replacing text with the badge right now.
    Thanks!

  8. I’ve created a dofollow website that searches only dofollow websites. This makes it a little easier to find them and maybe you can find some related to your niche.

  14. Sorry to say this, and I’ll go against other posters here, but I don’t think this article was that interesting. From what I read in this blog in other occasion, you can do much better than that…oh well, I wouldn’t be that surprise if this comment won’t be published :)

I wonder if U comment I follow will soon be seen in the same light as link farming by the search engines. It seems it could turn into a “you scratch my back I scratch your” form of nepotism. I am testing a twofold experiment with U comment I follow sites to see if people are living up to the claim and also see
if posting works and how. To see how posting a link works I have also created a twofold test. 1) Leave an interesting request.
    2) See if the link works.

I am trying to build a list of really good SEO Tools and resources
and am asking you and anyone else to contact me and add some thing useful to the list.

    Keep up the good work.

  16. Jason says:

You’ve made some good points. I did a little bit of research on the topic and found that most people will agree with your post.
